Bio
Or The Mocker Mocked, 1930, oil on canvas, 17 x 20 5/8 inches (43.2 x 52.4 cm), Museum of
Modern Art, NY.
Paul Klee was a painter born in
Münchenbuchsee, Switzerland, and is considered to be a German-Swiss. Movements
in art that included expressionism, cubism, and surrealism influenced his
highly individual style.
In
the image there is a drawing of a man using continuous line drawings, the whole
drawing shows strong shapes created from simple lines that look like the right
shapes that make the sizing of the face.
There
is a very small amount of tone used in this piece the tonal qualities have been
used in the features of the face, the whole face and neck have been used in
orange as a mid tone and then in the hair it is a highlighted area that is
strong to the viewer and grabs the eye. Then the direction lines from the hair
to through the blue eyes past the long nose takes the journey of the continuous
line to the red lips to finish off the piece.
The
main textures used on this are mostly in the background, as the background is
not the focal point of this image it is being used as a textured surface to
work from. As you can see that on top on the canvas he has put a thick layer of
dark paint so that the piece is striking and is not lost.
This
artwork makes me feel like the artist is trying to communicate an emotion of
the sitter and that the sitter might be a bit lost or confused and the shape
changes of the lines show this and are a symbol of this emotion.
I
think that this piece is a very good way of showing and putting across ideas
and emotions, as well as that I believe that the shapes in the work help the
viewer understand the whole face and neck as one and the way that each feature
is individual however comes together as one.
